Believe me, I’m as surprised as you may be that I’m about to quote famed Basketball player Michael Jordan. I’m not the biggest fan of him or basketball but I happen to stumble across two of his quotes this past week and both struck a chord with me.
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
I think sometimes we look at successful people, no matter the “success”–weight loss, financially, career, relationships–and think, “it must been SO easy for them”. I mean Michael Jordan must have just been born good, right? He didn’t have to work for his success he just woke up one day a famous athlete. We focus on his amazing success not really looking at all the failures he made while working hard to reach that level of excellence.
Yet the opposite is true when we turn that focus on ourselves, isn’t it? How many times have you let a failure or set back hold you back?
Let’s start giving ourselves the same respect and admiration that we give “successful” people. Let’s start focusing and celebrating our achievements and accept that there will always be setbacks along the way. It’s those setbacks that we must overcome that allow us to succeed.
