Hi Mary Ann,
What you want to do is consume high-quality nutrients prior to a workout - especially an intensive one where your body will quickly become depleted of energy. In this case, the current recommendation is to consume slow-digesting carbs 30 to 60 minutes prior to the workout.
For maximum fat-burning, many experts recommend that you exercise first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and you fuel up immediately after your workout. Alternatively, you can drink a glass of orange juice before heading out, which contains carbs to fuel your body.
It is up to you. Listen to your body. There is nothing wrong with eating before working out as long as you follow the 30-60 minute guideline. Certainly, there is no need to wait 2 hours later. That probably is a long-standing fallacy.
