I followed a link from my statistics program back to where it originated at a message board.
The discussion on that particular board was regarding Ms. Williams ( the super morbidly obese woman who passed this week after gastric bypass surgery ) and the fact that she was, indeed, bedridden, and receiving welfare benefits?
The line of thought at the message board was, if the family was receiving benefits, how is it possible for her to have gained up to nine-hundred pounds in bed on Food Stamp income?
I immediately got angry at the postings, I was "how could you!?"
But, now, I've given it a few minutes, and if I can remove the fact that this poor woman died, and think about the facts of the situation, I can discuss it.
Now, coming into this as a former fat girl myself, I know how much money it costs to feed a 320 lb. version of myself, and a formerly 360 lb. version of a husband, and three to four children. It's not cheap. Even now, with two of us at a toddler-stomach size, and four kids, it's not cheap.
BUT, if we were in a position to be feeding our family with government assistance - there's no way we'd afford the food in quantity, at least I think so? Am I wrong?
Who was taking care of that woman in bed? ( Pre-gastric bypass. ) Who was feeding her? She was gaining the equivalent of a half pound a day or more.
Why is it that if you fed a child to that degree, you'd be considered an abusive parent? If my children gained to super morbid obesity - they'd be removed from my care. It's considered neglect. The Department of Social Services would be here in no time. ::sigh::
It's hard to even suggest this - but I'd like to see a discussion on the topic. Please understand where I am coming from with this topic. No flames. Honest discussion is suggested. (I am not linking to the message board, because it's main topic does not jive with this blog. They linked to me because I posted about Ms. Williams' passing.)
Edited: I just learned that Ms. Williams had recently won a $1.5 million dollar settlement in the lawsuit stemming from drunk driver who hit her back in 2003, which was the trigger to being bed-ridden, and thus causing more weight gain. (She was apparently always obese, topping 299 lbs in seventh grade, but this accident had really damaged her.) Somewhere this morning, (I didn't save it) read that she was hoping to use some of her settlement winnings toward the gastric bypass surgery? This whole thing is just so sad. I hope those young girls of hers get every penny (left, after lawyer fees and whatnot + perhaps her hospital bills?) for their futures.
Again, this is just so sad. The whole story. ::sigh::
