The Self-Regulation Part of Losing Weight

Posted Mar 28 2009 3:41am 2 Comments
Losing weight always involves self-regulation. Self-regulation is a private process in which you set goals and then attempt to regulate your thinking, your behavior, and your motivation in accordance with these goals.

Interestingly, self-regulation works best with a certain kind of goal. The goal is called a mastery goal, which means the purpose of the goal is to increase your competence.

When it comes to losing weight, everyone needs to increase their competence in one or more weight-loss tasks (e.g., starting, overcoming procrastination, managing feelings, adhering to a weight-loss plan, accepting setbacks, planning for tomorrow, and many other weight-loss tasks).

Self-regulation, then, is the result of you becoming more competent at being able to do what you need to do to lose weight. As such, it should be within your reach.

Nice article. Some nice tips. But I just finished reading an eye opening weight loss report by Karen Simpson on West Coast News. She personally tested two of the best selling weight loss products in America and wrote an honest review. I was so shocked by the result of test after I finished reading the report because she revealed some of the hidden secrets in weight loss industry that the pubic will never know.

I strongly recommend you read the report because it will tell you how to really lose weight instead of losing your money on those products that won't work! You can read the report here:

Wouldn't it have been easier to just say "make up you mind and do it"?  Self regulation sounds more like something I need to do to make sure that I stay regular.

While I understand what you said, you need to write in a way that people can easily relate to and I doubt many of us sit around the table talking about "self regulation and mastery of self", however your point is well taken that we all need to to take control of ourselves and as the Nike slogan goes "JUST DO IT"!

Thanks for reminding us all that we need to stop thinking about it and "just do it"
