The Perfect Time May Not Be Now

Posted Jan 02 2013 4:18am

Timing is everything in life – or at least that’s how one saying goes.

However, there are a lot of situations where there is no perfect time to get started. I hear a lot of young married couples that we know say they are waiting for the “perfect time” to buy a house, have a baby, or make a career move. In such situations there may be times more desirable than others, but there is rarely the perfect time.

My husband and I joke about how he likes to “wait for the planets to align” before he starts a home project. Sometimes the planets align “correctly” and sometimes he just gets going on the project even when everything else isn’t perfect.

Weight loss is much the same way isn’t it? Here we are at the beginning of a brand new year and it may seem as though this is the perfect time to get started on your journey, the truth is, it may not be the perfect time.

And you know what? Who cares if it isn’t the perfect time? It’s better to just start then wait for the “planets to align” or the “perfect” date on the calendar. Like I shared in my video from the other day, I stopped watching and started doing.

I stopped watching the scale creep up. I stopped watching my kids run around while I sat down. I stopped feeling like I couldn’t control my eating and started taking those steps necessary to set myself up for success. I stopped watching my life revolve around what foods I would eat that day and started making concrete decisions on what I would and would not eat.

If we wait for perfect we may find that perfect never comes. In fact, waiting for perfect can become an excuse for inaction. And as we all know, inaction often leads to unintended or unwanted weight gain.

The best thing about not waiting for perfect is this: It frees us up to just get going on our own journey. It frees us from trying to get everything just right before we move forward, and in some ways, it releases us from trying to be perfect ourselves.

I wanted to encourage you to not wait for the magic moment or the perfect circumstances but to just start making those decisions that will move you forward in your life.

If you’ve been on a healthy path for awhile, was there a perfect time or did you just get started even if things weren’t perfect in your life? Diane
