Over the past year, there’s been an explosion of interest in the whole Paleolithic/primal/traditional diet and fitness trend that’s sweeping America and, quite frankly, the world. I’ve long considered my fellow Paleo brethren and sisterhood as cousins of the low-carb lifestyle since we agree that the Standard American Diet (SAD) has failed and that eating a low-fat, vegetarian diet isn’t gonna solve obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic health ailments. While Paleo has been mocked by the media oftentimes as the “caveman diet,” the fact of the matter is it really works for so many people who have decided to make it their preferred way of eating. And this week we’re celebrating “Paleo Extravaganza Week” with brand new podcasts all week long with so many of the leaders of this movement. we’ve got a very special weeklong edition of the podcast in a series I’m calling “Paleo. Later this week we’ll be hearing from the great Dr. Loren Cordain , the lovely and jubilant Diane Sanfilippo , the legendary and ageless Art De Vany , and the thought-provoking Monica Hughes . These guys are superstars in the Paleo community and I’m privileged to share them with you all this week!

In Episode 448 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we hear from 42-year old Australian Paleo triathlete and athletic coach Mark Pomery who enjoys engaging in competitive athletics and has transformed himself through some targeted changes in his nutrition in recent years. As someone who has been fit his entire life and engaging in regular endurance exercise, the Paleo diet opened his eyes to an entirely new way of eating that he never really thought about before. The re-education process away from a carb-loaded diet to one that is more like our early ancestors revolutionized how he fuels his body for optimal athletic performance.

Listen to Mark Pomery share about his Paleolithic athletic journey:

  • The influence of his parents on his interest in being active
  • His recent foray into Paleolithic nutrition
  • Why he used to eat the high-carb, high-grain diet
  • How a chiropractor introduced him to Paleo concepts
  • The methodical process of learning about this way of eating
  • Why he chose to take the “red pill” by choosing Paleo
  • The weight loss he and his wife experienced changing their diet
  • What his diet looked like prior to his Paleo/low-carb change
  • The “pasta-loading” parties that happen pre-race to competition
  • Why he was formerly so skeptical whether it was possible to do this
  • How to change Paleo from being “lunatic” to sound advice
  • The difference between calorie-burning vs. nutrient-burning
  • Why he believes compression clothing is beneficial for athletes
  • His participation in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Florida
  • The challenge of eating Paleo on the trip from Australia
  • How well he finished at the Florida championship triathlon in 2010
  • Whether he’ll ever do the full Ironman in Hawaii someday
  • Why athletes shouldn’t jump into long distance racing too quickly
  • His full-time occupation as a minister and what his congregation thinks
  • Why he doesn’t necessarily share about Paleo with his church members
  • The high-carb culture of “fellowship” in American churches
  • What he says “rips my shorts” when it comes to the nutritional dogma
  • Why he chooses to share what he does eat rather than what he doesn’t eat
  • The lack of knowledge about grass-fed meats in Australia
  • Why it’s so difficult to find wild-caught fish in Australia
  • The trouble finding coconut water and coconut milk in the land “down under”
