Did you know that kids can get the fitness bug? I have caught it and I know friends who have caught it but I have never seen a group of 10 year olds catch it until now! If you think this post is me bragging a little well… you’re right.
I have talked about my scout group before. Remember the Zebra Attacked By Missile moment? Just so you know all of my scouts do not picture me being attacked by a missile. It was just an activity, he was being creative! I actually think that they may like me a little bit (sigh). Kidding aside I have really fallen in love with these boys and most of them are leaving me by May and I am really going to miss them.
The past 2 months in scouts we have been working on the boys earning their fitness and athlete badges. They will be receiving them in March and they sure earned them! I just cannot even express how proud of them I am. These little guys were so excited about fitness and improving, it has been awesome. They each had their own exercises that the excelled in. Some of them could do 60 sit-ups, some 39 push-ups and some were able to do standing log jumps as far as 79″. What was even better is that all cheered each other on and helped one another out…coolness!
We started with an initial fitness test to see how many sit-ups and push-ups they could do along with some other exercises. It was pretty impressive how strong they all were. Each week they done them again and each one of them improved over the period of time. I was not real surprised about that. What really surprised me is the excitement they had about all of it. When I would see them outside of scouts they would let me know what they had done at home and how they were improving. Aww so darn cute! I did lose a race to them and had to bring treats the next week but they more than earned them. Not only did they learn about fitness we discussed nutrition and they learned how to take their heart rate. It is just amazing to me to see how smart these boys were about food choices. Seriously it was impressive! Now that we have learned all of this nutritional stuff I wonder what they would say to no more sugary treats? (evil laugh) Seriously I am going to switch it around I have already won them over with popsicles. Oh that was funny by the way! I was telling them that they were going to get a treat that was sugar-free. One of theme replied with “A sugar-free treat, that is impossible to make!” I still think he may not believe that there really was no sugar in them, even after reading the label.
The prize for doing so well was a visit to the local gym. Of course it is the gym I go to, Elite Fitness. If you want to see excited boys then take them to a gym, let them run and check things out…so much fun! They were able to really try out the equipment and see how weights work. I put them through a mini boot-camp and got a good laugh out of their faces. The hardest part of it all was getting them to leave. One hour was not near enough they really enjoyed it and wanted to stay… mission accomplished!
I can honestly say that if I was not working on my own health and fitness I would of never had the opportunity to have this experience with these wonderful boys. My journey is just getting better every single day!
If you want to leave a comment for these AMAZING boys please do and I will share them in our next meeting. I know they would love it!
