Staying in touch

Posted Dec 18 2008 7:25pm

Considering we are all going to burn up and die, it might be a good idea to stay in touch with those far away.

I have not traveled much out of the country but when I did I went to Kenya and Amsterdam. I spent 3 weeks in Kenya and calling home was a bear. I think a 3 minute call cost me $30 US. It was insane. I sure wish Pingo had been around then. They provide international phone calling cards with incredibly reasonable rates. For example, Kenya for 12.2/minute - that would be awesome. Also, lots of prepaid phone cards don't cover Africa. Which always fascinated me because people are so poor there very, very few have phones in their homes. Cell phones are big business. One person will buy one and then charge others to use it, it's a way to make a buck I guess.

When you sign up for Pingo they give you $5 of free calls. Now depending on where you call this could be like 4 hours. That's not bad. Here in Hawaii we have lots and lots of people from all over the world. They are either visiting or going to school or working here. Something like this would be good if you're from say, Sweden. You can call Sweden for 2.2/ minute. Wow, that's really cheap.

Also, the military. There are lots of military families here and these cards cover Afghanistan ( rates ) and Iraq ( calling card rates ). That would be a good deal then.

So there you have it. Looking to stay in touch with loved ones afar. This is the way to do it.
