Star Jones had Gasteric?

Posted by Nikki F.

The new Glamour edition contains an interview with Star Jones in which the infamous star shares her diet secrets. Rumors are going around that gasteric was her waist line saver. Didn't the surgery used to be highly regulated? Is it still?

I wonder what the chances are of an obese person losing an extraordinary amount of weight, and how the success stories achieved their goal.

Any insights?

Based on how quickly she was able to shed the weight, it seems very unlikely to me that she didn't have gastric bypass. Yes, the surgery is still regulated, but unfortunately due to the lure of making money, has seemed to be easier and easier to get. You are really supposed to have a doctor claim that you MUST have the surgery because it wouldn't be safe for you to lose the weight on your own and that you need to lose the weight or you will surely suffer for an obesity-related health incident. But, when I was working at a professional training center that was used for post-bypass patients to exercise and train after their surgery, it seemed more and more found it easy to just go in, request the surgery, and have no problem getting it.
Although, you really really have to think about this. It's like getting a tattoo. When you are older, do you really want to say, Well, at one point I could eat like a normal person but I went through a I want to be skinny phase so I'm really only hungry for a pea .... This type of surgery truly should only be for those who have a problem with their metabolism that can't be fixed and are at risk of dying from obesity. Just my opinion.
I hadn't thought about that...never being able to eat like a normal person again. I really think that would make me depressed. You'd miss out on so much...gormet dinner parties your friends slaved over, foods from around the world (when you travel you don't want to put a cap on your tasting). If you have to have the surgery done because of risk of death, fine. But if you are merrily bigger, then you're right, it's like a bad tatoo. Those people should really try something less extreme.

In 60 Minutes recently there was a study showing that Weight Loss Surgery ends Type 2 Diabetes. There is discussion about using WLS for Type 2 Diabetes patients even if they are not over weight.

Yes, Star Jones had gastric bypass surgery. I had gastric bypass surgery seven years ago. I was diabetic and lived an incredibly limiting life. In the beginning, I ate different but today, you wouldn't know that I had the surgery. I eat healthy and in quantities like others. I would have it every single year if I had to in order to live the life I have today. I lost 147 pounds and my diabetes has been in remission since the day after I had surgery. True, it isn't for everyone but it has given me my life and health back. Thanks for your post!
