Snacky Saturday: Be KIND to yourself

Posted Jan 01 2010 12:00am

(I was not paid for doing this review, nor did I get any free products from the manufacturer (boo). I bought this stuff with my own moolah and wanted to share my thoughts with you guys. That is all.)

It's been a long time since I've done a Snacky Saturday post, and I've got lots of great new things to share with you guys! Up first:

KIND bars

I'm a bar kind of gal. Back in my 20's that meant an entirely different thing, but these days it means that I love to have bars as snacks. When I first started this blog, I got hooked on Clif Mojo bars. They're still good, don't get me wrong, but I was looking for something with a bit more oomph, and a smaller ingredient list.

Enter: KIND bars

I saw these next to the cash register at my local ShopRite a few months ago, and I loved the whole nuts that were peeking through the clear wrapper. I picked up a couple of the "fruit & nut" variety, and threw them into my cart. I had a bit of sticker shock when they rung up at $1.99 EACH - double what I pay for the Clif Bars (when they're on sale). It took me a while to try the KIND bars since I didn't want to waste such a precious commodity.

But when I did try them - SHAZZZZZAM!!! Those suckers are GOOD! You get a nice crunch from the nuts, and a bit of sweetness from the fruit, but it's not overwhelmingly sweet. The texture is great - a bit sticky, mostly crunchy, and dense. I was hooked!

Because of the cost, I don't buy too many of these bars at a time, but I've been trying to buy a different flavor each time so I can try them all. Here's a list of flavors from the website, with my personal notes if I've tried that flavor:

  • Macadamia and apricot - YUMMY, I love macadamias!
  • Almonds and apricots in Yogurt - a bit too sweet for my taste, but not bad
  • Fruit and nut delight - DELIGHTFUL!
  • Almond and apricot
  • Nut delight - NUTTY and DELIGHTFUL! (sorry for the lack of inspiration there)
  • Fruit and nuts in yogurt
  • Almond and coconut
  • Sesame and peanuts with chocolate
  • Walnut and date
  • PLUS: Almond and cashew
  • PLUS: Almond, walnut and macadamia
  • PLUS: Cranberry and almond
  • PLUS: Mango and macadamia - YES, so good!
  • PLUS: Passion fruit macadamia
  • PLUS Strawberry nut delight
Don't they all sound so good?

So, you may be saying to yourself, "Self, I wonder why they call them KIND bars?" I'll answer that question by posting a blurb from their website:

The path to KIND began 15 years ago with PeaceWorks Inc., an innovative “not-ONLY-for-profit” business fostering joint business ventures among neighbors striving to co-exist in conflict regions worldwide, using market forces to break stereotypes and barriers. In 2003, after several successful ventures, our founder, Daniel Lubetzky, was still searching for that elusive snack that tasted good and was good for you, and eventually conceived KIND – as a brand of healthy snacks that are “KIND to your body, your taste buds, & the world.” KIND Snacks was founded on the principle of holistic “KINDness”: you need not sacrifice health for taste, or social mission for financial sustainability, nor your happiness for others.’ KIND Snacks not only helps fight growing health epidemics such as obesity and diabetes, but is totally transparent in its approach to create delicious, healthy food that looks and tastes delicious.

We donate at least 5% of profits to causes that foster global coexistence and kindness:
We donate not just money, but significant effort and time to causes that advance our social mission. This fall we launched The Great KINDING campaign in which we will enable a Great KIND act, voted for by the KIND community ( Our contributions to the PeaceWorks Foundation have supported efforts to foster global coexistence including the OneVoice Movement, Imagine 2018 (, and Goal 2018 (
So, while you're munching away on your snack, you can feel good knowing that you supported a company that tries to give back! Makes that $1.99 per bar a bit more palatable, doesn't it?

The nutritional info varies on the flavor, but here's an idea of what you get with the Fruit and Nut Delight variety:

Mixed nuts [Peanuts, almonds, brazil nuts walnuts] dried fruits (raisins, apricots (apricot paste, glycerol (vegetable based), pectin, apple fiber, citric acid], dates), honey, glucose, puffed rice, linseed, chicory fiber, soy lecithin

Not bad, right? The fat content is high because of the nuts, so do not fear the fat, people! Overall, this is a tasty snack that hits the spot and keeps you satisfied for a couple of hours. They get a big ole' Butt Shrinkin' thumbs up!

Tell me - have you ever tried a KIND bar?

Have a great weekend, everyone!
