Simple Tips for Losing Weight

Posted by Tracii H.

Losing weight should not be about counting calories, following a fad diet, deprivation, over-exercising, or obsessing about food 23 hours per day. There are simple, enjoyable things that you can do to jumpstart your own metabolism to burn fat and lose weight-- Eat breakfast. Breakfast should be the largest meal of the day. It should be protein-rich and should include some form of whole grain. Eggs, soymilk or rice milk, tofu, a protein-rich smoothie, or some other form of healthy protein should be included, along with a slice of whole grain toast, a piece of fruit, whole grain cereal with low-fat or soymilk, or yogurt (plain, no sugar). If you aren't hungry upon waking, you have eaten too much too close to bedtime and should make an effort to stop. Breakfast gets the metabolism in gear for the rest of the day and provides fuel for the mind and body. Eat 6 small meals per day instead of 3 large ones. Breakfast should be the largest, then lunch, followed by a small but filling dinner. 3 snacks like almonds, fruit, or some other natural, whole food should be eaten between meals to keep the blood sugar on an even keel and prevent overeating at meals. Stay hydrated. Drinking 8-8 ounce glasses of pure water daily aids in weight loss and is neccessary for good health. Herbal tea like chamomile, peppermint, jasmine, or some other non-caffeinated variety counts toward this. If plain water is hard to drink enough of, add a slice of lemon or lime and some ice.

That's the ideal diet, not necessarily in terms of losing weight, but generally good eating habits. When I get in that eating mode, I love it, but it's hard for me when I work 12 or more hours a day with about 3 hours of commuting (daily!). I'd love to get back on my personalized variation of the South Beach diet in which I did the above, though a cup of coffee in morning, fruit and yogurt and cheese and nuts in between meals, and dinner consisting of a big salad usually with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, turmeric (yummy and good for you!), and shredded skinless chicken. I definitely need the protein for grounding, whether chicken, turkey, or beans of some kind. Also, I use cinnamon a lot; it's a blood stabilizer so it cuts down on sugar cravings. And, I use stevia to sweeten drinks and other things; it's a natural sugar substitute, an herb from Paraguay, that's been used for centuries. Anyway, I know what works for me, I just got to get it working for me!
That is a very interesting and often not followed advice! Specifically the part about the largest meal being breakfast and finishing with a small, but filling dinner. It is so eay for me and probably tons of people, to eat larger dinners. Dinnners in this country particularly are the largest meal of the day. I have a friend from Romania who once pointed out how large our dinner meals are and she, in fact, sometimes did not eat dinner at all. At about 4 or so she had her last snack of the day and if she went out to eat with us, she would eat just fruits and veggies. In her culture, or possible just her family's rituals, dinner was no big deal at all. She was very thin to say the least, but healthy looking. SHe would still eat cookies and such, she didn't "diet", she just felt that is you are to eat cookies, you should eat them in the beginning of the day when you still have all day to burn it off!
