Ravenous Roni

Dude, I’m HUNGRY! Seriously. I can’t figure out what to eat.

Here’s the story. You may want to hear about my FABULOUS DAY in Chicago but I’m not ready. LOL I have so many pictures to sift through and I’m waiting for a few friends to email me some shots from their cameras. Plus, seriously, I’m too wiped after the plane ride to recap it. All I will say for now is… AWESOME.

However I wanted to reflect on one part of my day. The food.

The morning started with, yup, you guessed it a granola bar! It was fast, easy and free. I couldn’t go wrong. :~) Then after a nice active morning (weights, a run and a walk!) I was hungry. So I split a whole grain bagel and smeared a bit of cream cheese on it. A couple of hours later it was lunch time.

At lunch, I had a great conversation with some new friends (will link to and show off pictures tomorrow) and I reminisced a bit about how I used to vacation and travel in relation to my eating habits. How eating was always an event. I tried to pin point why, when looking at menus, I’d irrationally try to order as much as possible. Ordering large amounts of food, everything deep fried, fat filled and with extra cheese. What void was I trying to fill? Why was I so hungry for such things? I never approached food or ordering from the perceptive I do now.

Today what went into my decision was something different. It was about balance and nutrition. About having something fun, filling, satisfying and nutritious. WHY is it so much easier now? Why do the healthier decisions seem so much more intuitive?

Is it motivation? Momentum? Consciousness? Experience?

Boy I wish I knew. I think it’s a combination. An "all of the above", if you will. Today I looked at the menu and ordered a simple blackened fish sandwich, no mayo replacing the fries with steamed asparagus. Doesn’t that sound good? I didn’t need to order mozzarella sticks or loaded nachos while waiting for my greasy cheeseburger and fries (the old Roni’s normal fare.) My lunch was totally satisfying and I felt really good during and after eating it.

After lunch I was in total travel mode. Thank GOD I had granola bars handy. I needed three throughout my travels to ward off hunger. I could have stopped and grabbed a slice of pizza or some pre-made sandwich wrap but I wasn’t going to fall prey to the airport food traps. My granola bars were completely satisfying and I had more then enough on hand. :~)

However, now, as my title so eloquently states, I’m RAVENOUS! As I should be. It’s 11PM and I haven’t eaten dinner yet. Instead I think I’m going to enjoy some baked tortilla chips and carrots with some leftover Really Quick Spicy Black Bean Dip. It’s quick, easy and light right before bed. A nice combination as it’s way to late for a full meal.

Ok, so I’m hoping to get a full report of my fun Sunday in Chicago up soon. I have a busy day tomorrow taking the toddler to his first ever dentist appointment and trying to get ready for the week. Losing a weekend always effects the rest of the week. Doesn’t it? I feel like I lost my prep days.
