Post gastric bypass anemia + iron infusions = seizures?

Posted Oct 23 2008 9:03pm

Grasping at ideas about seizures, as any of us with this problem do - and this came yesterday from a peer:

" Because of my malabsorption,  I have had two iron infusions.  I have researched the long term side effects of this and it is lovely... but what are we gonna do... when we have anemia and our bodies are not making the blood we need, we need help.  Anyway... I have a great hematologist... who has had her nutritionist do some research on my seizures.  What started as complex partial seizures, have progressed to non-moving episodes, where I sit and stare and can't move any part of my body.

To my most recent and first ever, convulsive-type seizure... I wouldn't have known if my hubby hadn't witnessed the whole thing.  You know the kind, hands, feet twitching, eyes-rolling, and grunting noises.  Ok, I am rambling....... my hematologist.... ordered labs.... some special things ... and found out my COPPER is high.... I have yet to talk to her... but have been googling it and have found tons of info.  This can come from high doses of  IRON... (transfusions) this can cause seizures, migraines,  this can cause tons of symptoms that I have.  It's worth checking into.  I went into the hospital this past week for 4 days for Epilepsy Monitoring.... nothing happened.  But when I told them about my recent labs and my copper being high, they jumped on it quick.  This is one of our bigger universities.  They started ordering labs and tests.  They did not have the results when I was discharged.  But I will be checking back in the next day or two."

Of course, I go to play Dr. MM like always, finding shit like this.  (Makes me really want to go get my next infusion.)  But, here's a connection:

I note that many of us are ANEMIC.  Some have had this crap pumped into us, repeatedly and often.

( I know, I have like ten different reasons to have a seizure, but... I guess that makes it easier to pick one!  *smile*)

I did not have seizures until I wasAnemia -Girl, if I go back and search, I could probably pin down the timing. I went to the OB-GYN with my concerns, because I thought my issues were pregnancy related, my brain WAS indeed falling out of my head.

Then again, my blood level dropped to 24, so we assumed " that is what you were feeling.

Bullshit.  In fact, after I had the baby, I kept repeating to the nurses/my husband  "something isn't right, if I pass out or something, just remember, I warned you."

It happened RIGHT AFTER I pushed the baby OUT! I had a seizure ON THE TABLE.  The docs just passed it off as a "whatever."
