Obesity in Children Leads to Early Signs of Heart Disease

Posted by Nirmala N.

Researchers say that children who are obese or at risk of obesity show early signs of heart disease, much like obese adults with heart disease. Today, childhood obesity is a major epidemic in the U.S., and 19 percent of children ages 6 ro 11 and 17 percent of children 12 to 19 are overweight. Even among teeneagers, obesity can lead to decreased myocardial performance and abnormal diastolic function--in other words, early signs of heart disease. Research is still being done to determine whether these effects are reversible through weight loss.
