Inspiring Quotes From Famous Vegans and Vegetarians

Posted Jan 20 2012 3:32pm

I’ve been vegan off and on for the last several years now and there are certain challenges that come with being a vegan…

When you’re at a restaurant, you often have to explain the the servers how you can’t eat dairy or meat and ask them for special exceptions to the menu like, “Can you make me a chicken salad without the chicken?”

Oftentimes it’s darn near impossible to find something vegan on the menu, especially when traveling. And then everytime you meet someone for dinner, you have to explain to them why you’re a vegan…

“Why don’t you eat meat?”

“Why don’t you eat dairy?”

These are very common questions to which I still find trouble coming up with an answer in social situations… I mean I don’t really want to have that same conversation again and again, you know what I mean?

So then I decided to do some research and see who else out there is vegan and what kind of answers they might have to the question,

“Why don’t you eat meat…?”

Inspiring Quotes from Famous Vegans

Carol J. Adams (ecofeminist theorist) might say,

“There is a way to live a life of integrity, of trying to do the least harm possible, of integrating political beliefs with what you eat and how you treat others.”

Casey Affleck (actor) has said,

When people ask me why I don’t eat meat or any other animal products, I say, “Because they’re unhealthy, and they’re the product of a violent and inhumane industry. Chickens, cows and pigs in factory farms spend their whole lives in filthy, cramped conditions only to die a prolonged and painful death. Their bodies are then turned into food products proven to contribute to heart disease and cancer. To eat that is to eat poison”.”

Amos Bronson Alcott (teacher, Transcendentalist) might say,

“To be ignorant of one’s ignorance is the malady of the ignorant.”

Fiona Apple is a vegan

Emilie Autumn (singer, songwriter, violinist, harpsichordist, poet) said,

“I am indeed [a vegetarian]. I became vegetarian a very long time ago, around age eleven, when I realized that there was very little difference between a chicken, a cow, a horse, or my dog. Making that odd distinction between who we eat and who we don’t seemed very unnatural to me, so I just stopped eating animals entirely.

Veganism came later, around ten years ago, and that was a choice I made as I began to become more educated on the facts about how poorly even dairy producing animals are often treated, how many chemicals they are injected with to increase their output, and how they often end up with the same fate of animals raised for slaughter. So, it was both a personal health choice as well as an ethical one.”

Mayim Bialik (actress) says,

And G-d bless the people who make it their life’s work to care for animals and to better the world the way it works for them – maybe not for you, but for them. It takes all kinds of people to make this wide world go ’round. We each have a purpose here on earth. And for those whose purpose is to show that animals have a purpose too, I say good for them.”
