UPDATE, 11/2 -- Adding the gopel according to Babs:
Hey, did you know there's an election next week?
I don't really like to get into politics in public. I'd like to keep them off my blog because I prefer to avoid controversy and frankly, I don't want to alienate any potential return visitors. In fact, these days, I won't even discuss politics with my parents (mostly because we disagree and who wants to argue?) and I try to keep anything too narrow off of Facebook statuses, posts, etc.
But all that said, I don't think it's a big mystery who I support. I worked on the Obama 2008 campaign, after all, and, to just be blunt for once, there is just no way I am going to support a candidate who demonstrates such a blatant disregard for women. Yeah. There. I said it.
So I support Obama, but then, if my seven month old cousin was running, I'd vote for her over Romney. She, at least, would keep her opinions about how to manage my uterus to herself.
It's a mindfuck to me, actually. How does any woman support Romney? Please, explain it to me. And I am not stating that with condescension, I assure you. Truly, I want to understand, if you are female, how you can reconcile yourself with endorsing a man who would ban abortion, even in cases of rape, incest, and to save the woman’s life. Here is a man who vehemently opposes same-sex marriage, which basically relegates some of my closest friends and family to sub-par citizenship. Romney will allow employers to deny their employees coverage for birth control and other health services based on their personal beliefs (yeah, cause that's super okay, right?). He would give an okay to healthcare providers who want to increase rates for patients based on their gender.
Ladies, if you can intelligently and calmly explain to me how that sits well with you when you check off his name next week, I'll respect you. I promise.
Forget the economy, forget education and foreign policy. I'm not even going to touch the war or anything like that. I'm not sure I could speak well on those issues anyway and really, however your candidate feels about those things, it's fine. It's allowed.
But when it comes to MY gender, MY beliefs, MY body? The President and any other goverment official should just mind HIS own business, please and thanks.
So yeah, normally try to keep politics off my blog but, well... WHOOPS.
