Healthy Weekend: Rake It Till Ya Make It

Not only is it Friday, but it’s an October Friday. Honestly….the two things together kind of make me overwhelmed by all the warm and fuzzy feelings I have.

After my trail run yesterday, I was still dreaming of leaves. Who isn’t!? If you’re lucky enough to live in a climate with Fall, this is the perfect time to get out and rake some leaves!

Seriously…a 135 lb woman will burn about 100 calories raking leaves for 20 minutes. (And if you jump in the first pile and have to re-rake…double double calorie trouble!) It will also work your upper body and back. More importantly, it doesn’t feel like exercise. It just feels joyful! So put on your Uggs and favorite sweater, grab a rake, and have at it!

Once you’re done raking leaves, get creative with the rake and do a little strength training! Stand on one leg and extend your other leg behind you to tone your ass; after completing 10 reps, keep your leg extended and then do biceps curls using the rake. Switch legs and repeat.  Then do jumping jacks in which you lift the rake overhead (don’t do this in a confined space PLEASE).

Once you’ve gotten your cheeks flushed, you’ll just be so pumped! You’ll want to take advantage of your last weekend to do all those amazing pre-Halloween things: go to the orchard for treats, buy a pumpkin and carve it up, take your dogs out and get them Halloween costumes. Ah…I love it all so much!
