General Electric Sent Me A Healthy Gift Basket – WTF?

Posted Aug 06 2012 7:42am

So I got a message from General Electric (GE) on Twitter the other week – they said they wanted to send me a healthy gift. So, I thought okay cool! I like gifts :)

Well, yesterday the package came along with this nice note.

General Electric sent me this nice note with the food.

Look at this beautiful assortment of healthy foods!

General Electric send me a healthy gift basket! With a bow on top :)

Well, when I opened it up and saw the pretty bow on top, I knew I was in love!

That’s when I decided to turn it over and look at the back… oh look, the ingredients label:

The Ingredients of GE’s “healthy” gift. Are they trying to poison me?

You Call This Healthy Food… WTF?

The note clearly said that the basket was “filled with the best and healthiest snacks.” Since when were GMO oils, GMO soybean, white sugar, FD&C yellow 5 and FD&C yellow 6 (times two), artificial flavoring, and semi-sweet chocolate chips healthy?

It still amazes me that people who have no knowledge of nutrition continue to call artificial food-like substances “healthy food.” I believe that term should be saved for things that are actually food. I guess I’m a bit old school though.

Okay, so let me break the healthy and unhealthy ingredients down for you… the basket has 5 different “foods” in it.

Roasted Unsalted Cashews: Cashews and Canola/Cottonseed oil (both GMO most likely because they’re not organic) – Even though I LOVE CASHEWS , I wouldn’t eat that knowingly.

Roasted Unsalted Israeli Jumbo Pumpkin Seeds: Pumpkin Seeds and Canola/Cottonseed oil (again, both GMO most likely because they’re not organic) – Sorry, wouldn’t eat those oils.

Oriental Rice Cracker Mix: Glutinous Rice (aka sticky rice, which I love!), soy sauce (water, soybean, wheat, salt), sugar, starch, sesame seed, seaweed, chili, artificial coloring us FD&C yellow 5 & 6.

Okay, seriously, what’s up with the food coloring? I don’t want my food to have coloring, I want it to be food.

Eden Mix: Raisins, papaya, (FD&C yellow #5 and #6 again), apricots, pineapple, banana, (honey, turbinado sugar, artificial flavoring, coconut oil), apples, sugar, sulfur dioxide (preservative)

Again, more dyes and preservatives keep me from ingesting this delicious-looking eden mix…

Dark Chocolate Granola: Oats, maple syrup, semi-sweet chocolate chunks (sugar, cocoa butter, anhydrous, dextrose, soya lecithin (an emulsifier), vanilla extract), canola oil, brown sugar, spices and vanilla extract.

Alas, chocolate – my favorite! And yet the white sugar, GMO canola oil and mysterious spices (which could well be MSG) keep me from devouring this too.

So, despite receiving this gift of food from General Electric, I’m frickin’ starving right now. I won’t eat this. Anyone want it?

I hope you won’t think of me as a regifter just because the food GE sent me is full of artificial junk and I’d rather give it away than eat it myself.

P.S. If there’s some way to get General Electric to send me organic chocolate with pumpkin seeds, cashews and some nice dried fruit on the side without the dyes and artificial ingredients, I’d finally be able to eat a healthy lunch.
