Gaining it All Back: Part 3

Posted Jun 10 2009 12:20am
My first and only year at American University in Washington, D.C. was full of fail. The school's buffet style cafeteria food was actually really decent. Every meal cost me about ten dollars though, so I made sure to get my money's worth every single time I ate there. It was definitely the freshmen 15 deal.

The McDonald's on campus was my breakfast hot spot. I'm pretty sure I ate more than fifty of their crispy hashbrowns over the school year. Not once did I workout at the gym across the street.

Since the nearest grocery store in the area required me to walk more than ten minutes, I never ever cooked. Instead, my roommate and I often ordered late night Chinese delivery when we were hungry---"often" meaning almost every single night, of course. The delivery guys got to know me and my crappy tips really well. My stomach got to know the feeling of never getting the proper nutrients.

I will always think about my freshmen year at American as the year I shat on myself. I shot up to about 300 pounds by the time I came home for summer break. Weighing that much felt like having two 50 pound weights inscribed with the words "death" attached to my waist.

What was equally as terrifying was that I had let myself regain all 70-80 pounds I lost in ninth grade and the beginning of tenth grade. It's the kind of defeat that leads you to mindless eating. It's the kind of defeat that leads you to truly doubt yourself.

And that's a wrap :)
