Friday Foodgasm: Laced Chocolate

Keeping with the idea of our theme week, let’s talk about hemp!

Hemp as health food has become pretty trendy in the past couple years. And I’m sure all the people who have been getting called dirty hippies for the past decade are pissed that everyone’s getting on the bandwagon, but hemp is pretty healthy.

  • Hemp seeds contain essential fatty acids — an exceptional amount of OMG-3s along with GLA, which helps you absorb other fatty acids more efficiently.
  • Hemp is a complete protein, so hemp protein powder is popular among vegetarian and vegan athletes. Vega , a product line from super athlete Brenda Brazier, is pretty popular and I’ve tried quite a few of their hemp protein powders.
  • Hemp milk is a dairy alternative, like soy or almond milk. I’ve tried Tempt before and I liked it. It’s creamy, probably from the extra fat, and I used it in oatmeal and my homemade pumpkin latte .
  • Hemp oil is good for the skin, hair, and nails. I’ve purchased Nutiva hemp oil from Whole Foods before, just to mix up my healthy fats. It’s a cold-pressed oil and I found that I really like the taste. It’s pretty nutty and I like it on steamed broccoli. I’ve also mixed it in smoothies and it blends in pretty well.

Hemp products are one of those things that you don’t need to buy, but I definitely think that hemp has some great benefits and I love to try new things! Really, the oil is my preference; none of the other products really fit with my lifestyle.

However, when hemp is in chocolate, that fits with my lifestyle.

My new love for Vosges chocolate is really flourishing. I think part of it is that I just really like the company. It was founded by a woman, Katrina Markoff, and it’s one of those like hippie, green, social media savvy, women-in-business companies that gets me off. Good food karma and all that jazz.

And this woman is pretty much a chocolate artist. Each chocolate bar has a story; I also love how the packaging also includes ways to experience the chocolate through all five senses. (“Snap…hear a crisp ringing pop…you will hear the loudest snap with dark chocolate, a soft break with milk, and the faintest whisper with white.”) It’s pricey but that also helps me eat less of it — besides being a taste treat, it’s also a wallet treat. And I think that there is something special about consuming things that are created with so much thought put into them — maybe it’s just me, but I enjoy it more. It feels like a gift.

On my last trip to Whole Foods I was excited to see that she just released a bunch of new flavors. Usually I go with the bacon milk chocolate or the Black Pearl bar with wasabi, ginger, and sesame seeds. But now there’s bacon dark chocolate (!!!) and…the very exciting Woolloomooloo Bar!

Um, everything about this called my name. Macadamia nuts? Like ‘em. Coconut? Love it. Hemp seeds? Hit me!

This bar was really good. There’s something about it that’s a lot creamier than anything I’ve had recently. I thought it was going to be more salty and savory, but it really wasn’t. It might be because macadamia nuts and coconut just have a high fat content, but the word that kept coming to mind as I followed her directions for savoring it was creamy.

What’s also cool is that Vosges is now doing mini candy bars which is great if you are a broke-ass foodie or you don’t want to bring too much of anything that contains both bacon and chocolate into your place of residence. The smaller bar was just $2. To me, that’s a small price to pay for a foodgasm!
