Fit City: Washington, D.C.

Posted Nov 05 2009 10:02pm

Good evening from Washington, D.C.!

Today was a great first day in the city. After a productive morning around the apartment, Julia and I decided to head out on foot to do a little shopping. We decided to walk to our destination, which was a couple miles away, but that was perfect! It totally goes with my “move more” goal. Plus it’s a great way to see the city. We browsed, shopped, chatted, saw some sights. For me, it’s just so nice to be back in a city. After six months in Michigan, I am not used to seeing people wearing cute clothes just for running errands. Ah…refreshing! And I love D.C., I really can’t overstate it. I love history, and this is the place for that in the U.S.!

I made lunch from things I picked up at the grocery store: peach Chobiani, Bear Naked Fit granola, banana, and almond butter. I also had an orange instead of an apple — figured I needed that Vitamin C while traveling!

The evening was spent doing something I’ve been so excited about: running in D.C.! I convinced Julia, a reluctant runner, to go with me. She runs occasionally, but usually feels like she’s dying when doing so. We figured we could split up and she could walk if she wasn’t feeling it.

We first went by the White House, just to give a little, “Heyyyy!” to the Obamas!

The weather was perfect for a run. Brisk, sun setting, lights coming on all over the city. We started at the Washington Monument.

And from there we ran! We kept a good warm-up pace for a few, and then headed up the reflecting pool to the Lincoln Memorial.

Then we ran up the stairs (felt that ) to pay our respects.

Um, this is the best way to do intervals ever! And sightsee! It was turning into an amazing run. Then we headed back down and around and ended up at the Capitol.

We were having such a good time we missed a couple memorials along the way (sorry, Jefferson), but it was just a great run. It was so fun to explore the city like that, but the really exciting part was that Julia had an amazing run! Having a buddy to help her pace herself and not run the first mile like she was ending a race helped a lot, as did adding a pre-race snack. For me, it was a great run to do with someone else. No music; just city and friend. We ran all around and did four miles — and felt amazing after! Just totally refreshed and happy. I’m so excited that I got to help a friend discover her inner runner!

It was a seriously awesome start to the trip and a way to see the city. Now it’s time for a shower and a warm dinner!

Have a great night!
