Dear Maria...
My friend and I have been talking a lot about our mothers lately. Her mother pushed her much too hard, wanting her to be some kind of great brain. If she brought home anything less than an "A" on her report card, her mother would ground her for weeks and make her study more.
My mother, on the other hand, couldn't have cared less about smarts, or grades, or studying. But she did care about weight.
My mother went on one diet plan after another herself, but the truth is, she was never a fat lady. She was obsessive.
Well I did get fat. She stored all sweets in the freezer, so I wouldn't be able to get at them easily. She also watched me like a hawk. Lose the weight by high school, she told me, or you'll be sorry.
Well, I didn't lose it by high school, or after high school, or in college, or ever. I still lug around thirty-five extra pounds, and I can't get rid of it.
My friend failed in high school and had to make up for it by getting a GED. Only now is she starting to think maybe she'd like to go to college - she's forty-one. So, I'd say she rebelled against her mother, wouldn't you?
And as for me - the same. I'm still getting back at her for hounding me about my weight. And it's not doing me much good at this point, I can tell you that.
