A friend alerted me to an article on Adele Hite's blog, Eathropology. http://eathropology.com/2012/09/26/where-the-women-are-nutrition-edition/ I hate to admit that I didn't even know Adele had a blog, or I would certainly have been following it. Adele was Dr. Eric Westman's right-hand (wo)man at Duke University for many years. When budget cuts took away her job, she decided to become a doctor in her own right and is now working toward that goal. (Her real goal is to change the world, and she's making progress on that front as well.) I met her on a low-carb cruise and our paths have crossed frequently since then. You can see Adele in action in a video of the news conference held in response to the USDA's most recent nutrition guidelines here: http://www.youtube.com/watchv=P2iDUFQsHHE&feature=relmfu . Adele shows up at 3 minutes and 53 seconds into the video.
The post titled, Where the Women Are, Nutrition Edition, is her answer to Jimmy Moore’s 2012 survey of "the most trusted resources for the information you received about health.” http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/2012-llvlc-reader-survey/15253 Jimmy's list included only one woman this year. Adele's post is a tribute to the missing women. She says: "To me, they are the Chers, Madonnas and Dolly Partons of the nutrition world, although with a few exceptions, you may not recognize their names (which I know is part of the problem). Most of them have been around the block a time or two, and they know how the game is played—and rigged. They’ve succeed by being entirely who they are—tough-minded broads, compassionate caretakers, and reluctant warriors in the cause for good health for all."
Guess who was the first person on the list? (OK, they are alphabetical, and I'm a "B," but still...First on the List!)
When commenters pointed out that the list failed to include Denise Minger and other deserving women, Adele responded that they are on her “Rising Stars” lists, but that she started with the “grande dames” first. (Can I retire now?)
Thank you Adele; you would be at the top of my list!
