Eat More, Weight Less

Posted Jan 14 08 5:40pm 1 Comment
It may seem counterintuitive, but eating too little can actually be a roadblock on your fat loss journey. Severe calorie restriction can bring your metabolism to a halt. Exactly what we don't want to have happen. When you decrease your calorie intake by too much, your body goes into “starvation mode.” Because your body thinks that you are starving, it will counteract this reduction of calories by slowing down its metabolism If your body thinks you're starving, it's going to hold on to what it has and not burn that extra 50 pounds you want to get rid of. Plus, it's going to hold on to whatever calories you do put in. You may actually GAIN!

In general, nutritionists recommend eating no less than 1100 to 1200 calories a day and eating about every three hours. So you should have a snack every two to three hours to stay ahead of hunger. Nutritionists recommend snacks that include a high-quality protein and carbohydrates, such as low-fat yogurt and fruit, a smoothie, or soy cheese and a pear.

This is a mistake I've made and I'm sure lots of other folks have as well. If you are working out a lot you may need more than 1200 calories. I know when I'm working really hard, lifting weights and doing a lot of cardio I have to take in between 1400-1500 or my weight loss stalls.

Experiment until you find your perfect balance and don't go for the very low calorie diets (800 or less) They'll just sabotage your metabolism.

Thanks for the great post!
