I would think there is a distinct possibility that this is the case although I am no great expert, that when you are stressed or depressed it can lead to overeating/comfort eating, I would imagine these are both in the same context.
Although it does seem this might be the case now, a series of experiments have found out that when we are stressed or depressed a certain hormone is released into our body which makes us overheat.
When trials were done on mice to see if this was the case, the results were positive, finding this out could in the future help people with with various eating disorders.Such as bulimia, and anorexic people as well.
It would seem that this particular hormone is released into our bodies, in order to combat the stress/anxiety or depression which in turn tends to make us eat more.
When we do not eat, and when mice do not eat a particular hormone which is called ghrelin, tends to rise in our stomach, which in turn sends the signal to to the appetite control centre in our brains which makes us and want to eat.
The study which was conducted in a university and in Texas USA found that once we become stressed high levels of the hormone are found in our bodies, which leads to overheating as a end result.
What the researchers said was that this particular hormone in fact seem to have a particular job to do, as in natural defence against stress, but the only problem with this was it’s a a by product of comfort eating because it boosts your appetite which leads to eating more food.
The only problem with and manipulating this particular hormone is that if you take it away then the levels of anxiety and depression would become worse because the hormone tends to keep them in check.
But as we well know there is also a unwanted side effect of this. There could be other reasons for this particular problem but I dare say this is one of the more recent findings as regards comfort eating.
From my point of you I tend to think that there is possibly a psychological reason for it rather than a physiological reason for it.
I don’t know if you have heard of Maslows basic needs but this is a pyramid of needs that we have as humans in order to function properly and as the theory goes in one particular need is missing than others won’t be satisfied.
I thought I would share this with you because to me it is all relevant and would be of interest if you are comfort eater.
The particular needs are these from top to bottombiological and physiological needs, which basically means, your basic life functioning needs such as air, food, shelter, warmth intimacy, sleep and so on.
The next one issecurity needs, like law and order limits and stability within your life.
The next arebelongingness, lives and loves needs, which revolves around having affection from close family members and relations with other people.
The next one isesteem needswhich is approval from other human beings which revolves around achievement, status, responsibility and reputation.
And the final one isself actualisationwhich in its simplest form means motivation, or fulfilling your full potential to become the person that you are, and what it is intended for you to become as a person, if you are struggling to understand what this means then all you need to do is think, a painter needs to paint, a bricklayer needs to lay bricks, and a writer needs to write.
Now the whole point of this is if one particular need is not met and this can lead to problems, if we take away esteem needs which is where we don’t feel as though we have any particular status, or we haven’t achieved anything, then we can tend to dwell on the negative.
We might feel inappropriate or unwanted or a nobody, which in turn can lead to feelings of being dissatisfied which may in turn cause feelings of anxiety or depression.
All it would need would to happen is this particular need being taken away and you have the basis for either feeling stressed and or depressed.
If you actually look at each individual need each one is very important for becoming a happy human being and if if they are not all met, then you have the basis for problems whether it be overheating or any other addictive habit that may come along.
If you look through them all you will see that it does make perfect sense, and I know it does seem a bit strange adding this on but I did feel it was very relevant to the post in hand
And I do hope that you get some understanding from it if you are in fact a comfort eater.Have a good day were ever you are, or if you are in America have a nice day.
