Dieting Support is Gained and Lost Through Social Influence

Posted Apr 11 2009 12:55am

by Maria's Last Diet

Here's something to consider: The choices you make about what and how much you eat depend in large part upon the behavior of your eating companions.

The social influences on your eating habits are very powerful. They are so powerful, in fact, that they might easily override any weight loss goals you may have for yourself.

Analysis of social influences on eating habits indicates that people actually use how the people around them are eating as their guide. This makes no sense when you think about it. Why abandon your diet plan just because someone else is eating a lot? Yet, that is exactly what people tend to do: follow the example of others.

This works both ways. Someone who is in the presence of others who are eating weight loss food tends to "downsize" her eating.

So...who do you hang out with when you are looking for dieting support?
