Need to lose weight but don't know how? Are you totally new to the health and fitness world but have no idea where to start? Well, I am here to help you. This blog has daily posts on how to lose weight and get in shape, but sometimes I my information is too advanced for the person brand new to a healthy lifestyle. The purpose of this post is to introduce the very first steps people should take when trying to lose weight. This is for beginners, so if you have advanced nutritional knowledge then check out some of my other posts.
I will break this into three basic areas, diet (eating), exercise (activity) and sleep (recovery) to keep it simple and help you start losing weight.
Diet, you are what eat, this is as true as ever. When starting out on your weight loss journey, don't tell anybody or read anything (except this blog, haha). I know this sounds crazy but I want you to avoid the Internet phenomenon of information overload. Simply follow this advice:
don't drink anything with calories
if you know it will make you fat, don't put it in your mouth
Simple enough to follow right? Why shouldn't you drink calories? Simple, caloric drinks won't fill you up and are all fattening. Juice, milk, pop, Starbucks weight gainer shakes (tasty coffee drinks) will put mass on your ass without you even feeling full. If you are going to take in calories, enjoy them and feel them by eating them! By cutting out caloric drinks you will start to lose weight instantly without feeling hungry. Replace them with water or green tea. For point number 2, if you are trying to lose weight then eat like. You don't have to be a crazy diet Nazi, but if you have a choice between McDonald's and a chicken salad, use your common sense. You can eat this way without dieting per say, no one will know what you are doing so it can be your secret. Keep it simple, eat the foods your mother would want you to, avoid the crap.
Exercise. If you want to lose weight, you have to burn some calories. I could go into an endless debate about which exercise/activity is best for fat loss but I will keep it really simple. DO SOMETHING. There, done. I don't care if it is walking, biking, weight training, Tae Bo or Jazzercise! Just get off your butt and get out there doing what makes you happy.
Sleep. This aspect of losing weight is extremely important to reaching your goals because you burn fat when you sleep. Getting a good night's sleep reduces stress and improves energy. If you sleep 8-10 hours a day you will lose weight because you can't eat when you are asleep! Also, plenty of sleep will make your body more able to handle insulin binges from overeating. So, the more you sleep the less you will eat and the more fat you will burn. Go to bed!
That is it, nice and simple:
