So many times, people talk about the benefits of losing weight… but the truth is, if you’re overweight or obese, the costs of losing weight could be huge!
How much does it cost to lose weight?
Most diet pills cost between $20 and $250 for a month’s supply, depending on what brand you buy. However, not only do I not recommend taking diet pills because they are unregulated (meaning no one looks after them to make sure what they say is in the pill is actually in there or that something extra is not added in without being on the label) and the vast majority do not work at all, and even most “diet pill success stories” end up gaining back the weight afterwards plus some extra for good measure.
But there are other side effects of many diet pills – including cramping, gas, diarrhea, malnutrition, malabsorption, gut problems, high blood pressure, raised heart rate, heart attack, cardiac arrest, coronary heart failure, hypersensitivity, pruritus, rash, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, horrible bruising, blood clots… and the list goes on!
Of course, the real list of side effects of diet pills would be in the thousands but that’s also because there are so many thousands of diet pills on the market – and again – they are unregulated and often sold by promoters on the internet who are just looking to make a quick buck and could care less about your health (or your weight for that matter!).
So how much would it cost you to have a heart attack because of taking diet pills? At least $1 Million says CNN.
That’s a big hidden cost of taking diet pills – is it worth the risk?
Weight Loss Surgery
For those who don’t want to go the diet pill route, there’s always the wonderful surgical route! Hey, if you can’t get rid of the fat with some pills, why not just cut it out?
Weight loss surgeries include liposuction, tummy tucks, LapBand surgery, gastric bypass surgery, vertical banded gastroplasty, an adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy, intragastric balloon, and gastric plication (just to name a few of these weight loss “procedures”).
And if you think the names of the surgeries sound wierd enough, just wait until you find out what a sleeve gastrectomy with a duodenal switch really is!
But the complications of bariatric surgeries can be quite severe. In fact, a study of 2,522 insurance claims of patients who had bariatric surgery showed that 21.9% of patients suffered complications during the initial hospital stay and over 40% of the patients suffered complications within 6 months of the surgery. And the long-term complications? Well, you can just imagine what that kind of surgery would do to your body’s ability to absorb nutrients…
So when you think about the cost of tummy tucks and other bariatric surgeries, you’ve got to realize that it’s not just the medical bill – it’s all the other bills on top of that that add up.
Is it worth the cost? You decide!
For those of you looking to use a more natural weight loss route, you can always try some new workout gear!
There are treadmills, machines that guarantee you will get six pack abs, kettlebells (which I actually like), gym memberships, online fitness memberships, training products, insane home workout programs , fitness bootcamps, fat camps, fitness vacations, personal trainers, and a host of other products and services to help you lose weight.
Most people I talk to have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on these products and yet still struggle with their weight. Why is that? I think one of the reasons it that people sabotage their weight loss plans .
But if you can learn from others’ experience, expect to invest a few thousand dollars in workout and fitness products to reach your ideal weight – it’s going to take a big commitment of money as well as time, effort and energy to reach your goals. There are no quick fixes for weight loss!
The great thing about starting a new diet program is that not only do you have to buy the new weight loss program, but you have to learn how to lose weight, read all the books, listen to the lectures , and spend a lot of time learning how to do it and why it’s a good idea in the first place.
Most people I talk to have spend hundreds of dollars on diet books and programs – which can be either a good thing or a bad thing.
Personally, I’ve spent thousands of dollars on books on nutrition, weight loss, training courses, workshops, seminars, retreats, conference calls, webinars and so forth – because I was passionate about health and wanted to learn more. So I definitely think it’s a good idea to invest your own education – especially when it comes to your health.
Just don’t expect losing weight to be cheap – it’s going to take an investment, one way or the other.
