CSA Week 2 – I’m Seeing Red

I’ve got to tell y’all, I’m really loving our CSA! After picking up our produce yesterday I posted a photo to Instagram and had a few people ask me what a CSA is. Instead of just assuming everyone knows what a CSA is, I thought I would take a second to explain.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Now every CSA is set up differently but in most cases a farm will sell weekly shares of their crops to the community. The community gets amazingly fresh produce and the farm is supported by their community. A CSA can range from vegetable shares only to vegetable, fruit, cheese, meat, herb, flower, and egg shares.

CSA programs are in my opinion extremely affordable and can vary depending on how far the farmer has to drive to deliver the shares (boxes). In most cases, the CSA will require you to sign up for a season and will require payment upfront (this helps to support them on the front end). Our CSA, which is a weekly 60% vegetable share, weekly fruit share, and a bi-weekly egg share cost us $717.50 for pickups from May 21 to October 28. That’s roughly $31 dollars a week!

As we move into our second week I can honestly say it is SO worth the money!! We’d easily spend that much at the grocery store and the produce would not be any where close to this quality.

For CSA week 2 we got a lot of RED… well, green actually but you’ll see what I mean.  Starting in the upper left hand corner and moving clockwise we have…

  • Frisee lettuce
  • Red leaf lettuce
  • Red kale
  • Green mustard
  • Rhubarb
  • Strawberries
  • Red romaine lettuce
  • Turnips
  • Eggs
  • White scallions
  • Red scallions

I see a LOT of salads in our future this week.  We’ll use up the frisee, red leaf, and red romaine that way.  I have no idea what to do with the mustard greens and the red kale, but I’m sure I’ll find some yummy recipes like last week !

The other ingredient I need to do research on are the turnips.  No idea how to use those babies.  I have a feeling though that the scallions will show up in a lot of our meals this week.  In our eggs, over salads, and in dinners.

This was the first week of our fruit share and I honestly wasn’t surprised to see rhubarb and strawberries.  It’s what’s in season.  Although I can make another crumble, I’m thinking of making a jam with this week’s fruit.  We’ll see.

I don’t know if I’m most excited about the eggs, but I’m really excited.  It’s amazing how different farm fresh eggs taste.  They are just so rich and delicious!

Joining the CSA has been really good for my diet too.  It’s amazing how different it is when you’re really planning your meals around the produce you’re receiving.  It’s the first time I’ve really felt like I’m living seasonally.  It also doesn’t hurt to be eating so much produce and to be enjoying so many tasty recipes.  It’s making this season so fun!
