How dominant are the old overeating/overweight patterns? How stable are they? How resistant are they to change? How open are you to new ways?
When stable behavior like overeating and being overweight is the problem, it's best to make room for new behavior. You can start small. Making a little room first is the way to go. Try to change over from the old to some new behavior. This changeover creates instability. It's important to shake up the stable problem behavior. If you don't destabilize it, then it stays and doesn't give the new behavior a chance to become part of your weight loss armamentarium.
You'll have to be brave enough, tough enough, patient enough, and wise enough to endure the shake up. If you persevere, you'll be rewarded by making yourself equal to the weight loss challenge. The new behavior will be reinforced by its effectiveness, and you will have created a new stable behavior, one that is a solution not a problem.
