When we lived in California and the kids were little, we went camping a lot. Almost every Friday would find us on the road heading out somewhere. We even went camping in the winter. One winter we camped at Lake Shasta. Now if you know Lake Shasta it's snow fed and cold in the middle of summer. In winter it's downright freezing. The water is so cold it chills the surrounding air.
At that time we had all our own equipment; tents, sleeping bags, cook stove, etc. We had special boxes made that held it all and would just load up the boxes into the truck and we were off. But you know what? Camping equipment is expensive. We had 4 people (us and 2 kids) so we needed a really big tent. I think we spent $400 on the tent alone and that was 20 years ago. I can imagine what they cost today. But since we went all the time it was worth the investment. We definitely got our money's worth out of that equipment.
Here in Hawaii we don't camp hardly at all so we don't have equipment. On the few, rare occasions when we do camp we have to scrounge and borrow the necessary items. It's a real pain. But now there's a place online that has camping and GPS rentals. You can rent all the items necessary for you next camping trip, have it delivered to your door, and then return it when you are done. This is one of the best ideas I've heard in years. You don't have to store the equipment, camping gear can take up lots of room. You don't have to worry about maintenance, what a pain. Just order it and send it back when done.
They also rent GPS equipment, now this is pure genius. I geocache which, for those of you that don't know, is people hiding things then publishing the GPS coordinates. You then try to find the items and generally take a token and leave a token. Most of the caches are hidden in areas kind of out there, mountains, etc, and the only way to find them is via the GPS coordinates. Now when I was getting into this I was trying to decide which GPS unit to buy, it was hard. I could only look at them in the store, they wouldn't let me take them for a test drive :( Now you can rent GPS units, try them out and decide which on you like. What a fantastic idea.
So the next time you want to go camping or are considering a GPS unit check out lowergear.com and save some money renting :)
