Bob vs. Beth

Posted Oct 23 2008 9:38pm

A reader comment:  " I was wondering which of you had the surgery first and  whether your husband lost weight quicker than you."

While we went through the pre-op counseling and classes mainly together, we had our procedures done five weeks apart.  We got kicked out of the group sessions though, and had to go solo with the psychiatric teams because I am trouble.  I told the psych-doc that my husband would eat a stack of Oreo cookies in one night if given the opportunity.  Big deal, right?  Ooh, cookies, scaarrrrry.  So anyways - she tells Bob that he might have to reconsider his procedure because he's a "binge eater."  Um,  HOW DOES ONE BECOME 370 POUND MAN?!  It ain't by eating "portions" or "eating mindfully" now is it?  Eating a stack of cookies would happen, a lot.  We used to drive by the drive thru, just to drive thru.  Portion was not an option.  I would order a six pack of chicken nuggets, as an appetizer to my burger!  I topped out at around 320 lbs.  Jeezus!

Anyway - I went in April '04 - and he went in May.  By the time I was feeling well - he was going under - and it worked out good that way.  I started at 298 (yeah baby!) on the day of surgery - and saw (shutupIwillseeitagainIpromise) 149 ONCE in the spring/summer of 2005.  I rebounded from 149 to 160ish and stayed there for what seemed like forever.  Then, preggo once, up to over 175 lbs.  Preggo twice, up to well over 200 lbs.  (Ten weeks post babe, I'm about 176, one pound over pre-preggo (still) but I'm actually trying to lose now.)

He lost very fast, faster than me.  I don't remember the stats - and I deleted the old blog last night (EGADS) but... he went from 340 on the day of surgery to 165 in July of 2005.  He's rebounded, and hovers from 175-185 lbs, but he eats whatever he wants, with the exception of cutting back to protein bars for occasional meals sometimes when he's feeling fat.  Looking at him now, you cannot tell he was a big guy.
