Tea bags. Okay, so I said that for my own amusement. If my fiance is reading this, he's probably getting a kick out of it too :) Today, as I sip my tea from my eco-friendly travel mug, I'm going to talk about the importance of green tea. Everyday, I try to drink at least one cup of green tea, perhaps adding a bit of lemon and honey as well. Not only is it tastey, but it is also a very powerful antioxidant.
Free radicals are caused by intrinsic and extrinsic environmental factors. Free radicals can be caused by smoking, excessive drinking, sun damage, and an unhealthy diet. They weaken the cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cadiovascular disease, as well as age-related diseases? Oh yea, did I mention that they also cause wrinkles? Yes, free radicals cause wrinkles!
How do free radicals cause wrinkles you ask? Here's a perfect example. Your skin is part of the integumentary system in your body. If you smoke, you are suffocating your skin, causing the pores to clog with cigarette smoke, sallow, and for the cellular walls to weaken, causing the skin to weaken and wrinkle. This naturally comes with age, why speed it up by smoking?
Since free radicals effect our bodies daily, they can be slowed down by intaking several foods with antioxidants. (i.e. blueberries, broccoli, tomatoes, red grapes, garlic, spinach, carrots, whole grain, soy, and GREEN TEA)
One of my favorite foods than contains antioxidants is green tea. As I mentioned above, I try to drink at least one cup of green tea per day. Sometimes it's hard to do when I'm always on the run, and going to Starbucks and paying close to $3 for a cup of tea begins to add up. I did, however, purchase one of those cute Smart Planet Eco-Safe Reusable Coffee Travel Cups, shown above. What I love about it is that it's safe to clean and refill as you please. Not to mention, that having something cute like this to carry around will make you look forward to enjoying your cup of tea.
The Benefits of Green Tea:
- Numerous studies have shown tea polyphenols to have protective effects against free radicals, cardiovascular damage, some cancers, infections, toxins and so forth.
- There have been a number of encouraging studies of skin benefits of green tea. Green tea appears to exert sun damage protection by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation rather than by blocking UV rays. Therefore, green tea may synergistically enhance sun protection when used in addition to a sunscreen.
- Considering their well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, topical green tea polyphenols are likely to slow down the development of some signs of aging.
So, next time you're needing a coffee, consider a tea, and reap in the health benefits of it instead! Numi green tea is one of my favorite brands to enjoy. Not only is it Bay Area local, but it's by far one of the tastiest teas that I've sipped. If you're feeling daring, add in some ginger and honey for extra antioxidents.
