Temple University podiatrist Dr. Howard Palamarchuk advises walkers not to ignore foot and ankle pain. Dr. Palamarchuk offers tips for avoiding foot, ACL, head and sun-related injuries in an interview with United Press International Health Correspondent Alex Cukan.
Definitely, it is important to have the right shoe. I suggest going to an athletic specialty store when it's not so busy. When I was in Air Force Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, they had a special day when we would buy our walking and running shoes. Sales reps from several different brands came over and gave us individual attention. They would ask questions such as, what hurts when you are walking for a long time? From that, they were able to determine that I needed a higher ankle for extra support, but not too high like a basketball shoe. I think at the time, they had me in Avias.
