“Everywhere is walking distance if you have enough time.” – Steven Wright. Steven Wright has a dry way of appreciating “the obvious”. I think of our ancestors – the ancient and not so ancient – traveling across nations and continents on foot, mostly barefoot. Recently, I had my DNA tested. The genes don’t lie: my ancestors walked from the Black Sea to the Alps and back again. My husband has a Civil War ancestor who walked from Ft. Delaware to Bean Station, Tennessee. Think of the Trail of Tears, when the Cherokees walked from North Carolina to Oklahoma. Those are some long walks! I can’t even imagine walking to the mall in the next suburb. It just makes you wonder what we are really capable of.
