Whole Foods Market Recalls Bulk Items Because they May Contain Peanuts Contaminated with Salmonella

Contact:Whole Foods Market

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --February 5, 2009 – Austin, TX – Whole Foods Market is voluntarily recalling all code dates of the following bulk items because they may contain peanuts that have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella:

Bulk Carob Energee Nuggets (sold by the pound from self-service bulk bins)
Bulk Chunks of Energy (three flavors, sold by the pound from self-service bulk bins)
Bulk Fresh Grind Honey Roasted Peanut Butter (sold by the pound from self-service grinders)
Bulk Honey Roasted Peanuts (sold by the pound from self-service bulk bins)

Any customers who have any of these items at home are encouraged to dispose of these items or return them to one of our stores for a full refund.

This action was taken as a result of the recently expanded recall by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) to include all peanut ingredients produced in their Blakely, Georgia facility, in turn affecting Whole Foods Market supplier for bulk peanuts.

None of the recalled Whole Foods Market products have been directly linked to the salmonella outbreak, and there have been no illnesses reported.Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The four recalled products were sold in Whole Foods Market stores located in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
