Vitamins & Supplements Tips - B-complex

Posted Aug 24 2008 1:33pm
Alcoholism depletes B6. High levels of alcohol intake, especially if coupled with a poor diet, lead to B6(thiamin) deficiency and severe neiurological problems
B-complex. The most important of the B complex vitamins are B6(thiamine) and B12(cyanocobalamin)
Don't worry about the other B numbers. Some B-complex "vitamins" are not essential for people, such as adenine(B4), inositol(B8), PABA(B10), choline (B11)
Folate helps prevent strokes. The good news is that there is folate enrichment in most whole grain products, so it is easy to get enough folate in your diet
Vegetarians need B12. B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is found only in animal sources of food, so either add dairy to a strict vegetarian diet, or take a B12 supplement
Vitamin B12 deficiency. Low B12 causes pernicious anemia. This disorder can be caused by inadequate diet, or by poor absorption of B12
Vitamin C is ascorbate. It is found in fresh citric fruits, broccoli, peppers, spinach, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, and cabbage
