Vitamin D

Posted by C.L. R.

I'm curious - why is it that getting too much sun can make you feel tired and achy at the end of the day? Is there such a thing as getting too much Vitamin D? I know that it could be attributed to dehydration from being in the sun, but I'm typically very careful about getting enough water. So, what gives?

No. Excessive exposure to sunlight does not lead to overproduction of vitamin D. You can rich toxicity levels of vitamin D from supplements. The name of vitamin D you get from the sun is vitamin D3 and D3 does not have significant biological activity. Rather, it must be metabolized within the body to the hormonally-active form known as 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (active form of vitamin D)

I don't know why people generally feel tired after being in the sun. It is possible that it is dehydration. Being in the sun also speeds up your metabolism a bit.

But the fatigue that you are experiencing is NOT due to Vitamin D toxicity. Vitamin D toxicity NEVER occurs with too much sunlight. Not even for lifeguards!
