Of course if you want to consider popcorn a healthy alternative, you cannot add tons of butter, flavoring or seasoning, like people do at movie theaters. Popcorn contains very high amounts of antioxidants, a substance called polyphenols. In fact, polyphenols are more concentrated in popcorn due to the fact water content makes up only four percent. In comparison, polyphenols in fruit are diluted by about 90 percent of its water content. In addition, the hulls of popcorn contain the highest concentrations of both polyphenols and fiber.

Recent studies have shown that the amount of polyphenols in popcorn is 300 mg a serving compared to 114 mg for sweet corn. The levels of polyphenols were also 15 times greater than whole grain tortilla chips. In some cases, one serving of popcorn will provide more than 70 percent of the daily intake of whole grain. Additionally, popcorn is a dieter’s great choice with only around 30 calories for one cup serving.
