Prenatal Vitamins and Folic Acid Importance

Posted by Teresa J.

Now that I am baking baby #2, I am careful to take prenatal vitamins. Though I started taking them when we were trying to conceive, it is especially important now. During the first few weeks of a fetus's development, folic acid (something that is included in prenatal vitamins) is instrumental. It It helps to "insure proper formation of the brain and spinal cord" because it "aids in the regular cellular development and regeneration" (http://www.womenshealthcaretopics.com/folic_acid_pregnancy.htm.) So, if you are planning to become pregnant, consider starting those prenatal vitamins even before you conceive and get that body prepped!

Be sure that you are also taking adequate dha and omega-3 fish oils.  Those nutrients in addition to folic acid are used to to support brain development.
