New studies link Doctors do not know how to prevent macular degeneration in the elderly but two new studies suggest adding fish and vitamin D to the diet may help. The National Institutes of Health's National Eye Institute sponsored a trial in which 4,519 people aged 60 to 80 between 1992 and 1998 participated. Researchers analyzed food questionnaires that measured intake of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients (such as fatty acids) among those participants who developed macular degeration to varying degrees and those who did not develop it at all. Researchers confirmed omega-3 fatty acids helped prevent macular degeneration and vitamin D was linked to a reduced risk of early age-related mascular degeneration (AMD), but not advanced AMD.
