I've become a light sleeper and would wake up around 1 am and end up being awake for 2 hours or longer. I have no clue as to why I can't stay asleep or fall back to sleep. It's like my eyes pop open and my mind starts thinking and won't shut down. I averaged 5 hours sleep a night split up over the night.
I don't do well on too little sleep so I wanted to find natural ways to help. I will not use OTC sleep aids or worse, prescription sleep pills. The whole food multivitamin I take helps to relax me and calms my mind so I can fall asleep. When the problems started with waking and staying awake for hours I read and researched many things to help.
Here's a little of what I found that helped me fall back asleep and even stay asleep all night.
Eat a protein snack about 90 minutes before going to bed.*
Drink lots of water throughout the day.
Exercise helped a lot. I use my Rebounder from Little Spa during the cold winter months. Jumping is a great way to release toxins.
~~ This might not work for a lot of people until you get your sleep problems under control... Drink 2 cups of water before retiring because a body detoxes while we sleep and needs the water to flush toxins. Now I get up to use the bathroom but fall right back to sleep.
Drink a cup of Chamomile tea an hour before bed. I use two tea bags - one tea bag is more like colored water.
Lower the temperature in the bedroom. If I wake up too warm it's almost impossible to get back to sleep.
Certain herbs and vitamin supplements help some people. I take and recommend the Green Pops from Whole Food Nation for the mix of herbs and veggies known to help calm the mind and body.
I tried a melatonin supplement from Dr. Mercola that really helped to stop the middle of the night sleep problems. It is a spray so I didn't have more pills to take. Three sprays of this melatonin and I was falling asleep in 20 minutes. Yes it did help me to stay asleep and fall back to sleep faster if I got up for a pit stop.
* For my protein snack I eat yogurt with a whey protein powder, B complex rice bran (from Whole Food Nation), flax seeds (whole seeds I grind myself in a coffee bean grinder) and a bit of pure grade B maple syrup (from natural food co-op) or fresh coconut. (Yes, I shed my own coconut, YUM!)
Good luck finding ways to get to sleep and stay asleep. Please go with natural aids instead of OTC or prescription sleep pills. None of the drugs will be safe long term.
I wanted to write more about the history and research on Melatonin but it looks like Dr. Mercola has it all on his site - so read more and watch his video from his site.
P.S. The Green Pops and Melatonin are both affordable and natural products.....
