Functional Foods

Posted by Tamar F.

According to Prepared Foods magazine, “functional foods” in the US is a $15.4 billion business. Functional foods and beverages are those which make a distinct, written health claim. On one hand, consumers are skeptical of their benefits – but on the other hand, they aren’t consuming enough to get the benefits. Consumers also think these items are overpriced.

About half of the people who do consume these products do it to “make up for poor eating habits”. There is some controversy that the FDA is allowing these claims to be made if they are “qualified”.

Recently, the FDA has gone through some major changes. Particularly, using the black box label for potentially dangerous anti-depressants. FDAs track record includes kickbacks, withholding information on the dangers of drugs... Luckily, as Americans we have the right to observe for ourselves and make up our own mind. That is what I do with food and health. What is true for me is true for me.
