A new study recommends that children should get double the amount of vitamin D to prevent serious diseases.
The report by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that millions of children will need to take vitamin D supplements in order to reach the new recommendation of 400 international units daily, an upgrade from the previous 200 IUs.
The study says children from newborns to teens do not usually get enough vitamin D from food sources, therefore supplementation is necessary. Teens normally drink little or no milk, one of the best sources of vitamin D.
Most available milk products are fortified with vitamin D but kids are not drinking enough of it. Some other foods are also rich in D, like fortified cereals. Fish is another rich source of vitamin D, including tuna, salmon, catfish and sardines.
However, the human body is still the best “source” of vitamin D. The body produces vitamin D when sunlight hits the skin, a small amount of sun exposure should be plenty to increase the daily D production. The problem is the risk of skin cancer due to sunlight exposure.
Vitamin D supplements are still the best way to increase intake of such an important vitamin. Deficiency may lead to bone disorders such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and may also contribute to osteoporosis and joints related problems.
Taking vitamin D as a supplement may be essential for the development of your kids. With sun exposure diminishing as the winter approaches, it could be a perfect time to start supplementation and keep your kids healthy.
