Crucifers (Broccoli) Cut Risk of Cancer

Posted Oct 22 2008 4:38pm

Did you know how Broccoli is a power veggie?
Human population as well as animal studies consistently show that diets high in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower, are associated with lower incidence of certain cancers, including lung, colon, breast and ovarian cancer. Now, research published in the International Journal of Cancer (Zhao H, Lin J) suggests that bladder cancer can join the list.

In addition to its glucosinolates, broccoli in rich in a flavonoid called kaempferol. Research calculating flavonoid intake in 66,940 women enrolled in the Nurses Health Study between 1984 and 2002 revealed that women whose diets provided the most kaempferol had a 40% reduction in risk of ovarian cancer, compared to women eating the least kaempferol-rich foods. In addition to broccoli, foods richest in kaempferol include tea (nonherbal), onions, curly kale, leeks, spinach, and blueberries.
