Afternoon Energy Boost

Posted by Heather J.

Can't say awake at work? Me neither! Many days I start nodding off when 3:00 rolls around. Maybe it’s because I’m an early riser, a light sleeper, or run first thing in the morning. Dr. Weil, MD, reports that at least two-thirds of adults say that sleepiness interferes with their concentration at work and makes handling stress on the job more difficult. About 40 percent of younger adults said they were sleepy at work at least two days a week. Often, the problem is inadequate sleep. Other times, daytime sleepiness is related to one’s feelings about their work - boredom, frustration or some other negative emotion. For an alternative energy boost to caffeine, ginseng, over time, can help dispel fatigue. Other herbal options include cordyceps and ashwaganda, both of which are prized in their respective traditions as energy enhancers. Look for standardized extracts in capsule or tablet form, and follow dosages recommended on the products.

I drink one of my healthy energy drinks. It has 2 ounces of the 9 essential fruits and veggies that most of us deprive ourselves of everyday.
What about that tried and true cup of coffee? I have to admit, I love the cafe more than anything and when trying to back up off it a little bit, I noticed that the most effective way was to have a cup in the morning and a cup around 3-4 when that crazy drowsiness kicks in. Is it healthy? Maybe - they say that it aids with digestion and has antioxidants.

Take a siesta!

I'm completely there with what Swati wrote. A good, 15-minuter works wonders!

Also, there have been a number of recent reports on how naps can increase longevity by lowering your chances of a heart attack and other heart issues. In the short term, naps revive you. It's less common in the U.S. than in other countries to take an afternoon break at work, however, some companies have caught on to the benefits: better health for their employees; good for the company's bottom line. So, they've created napping rooms in the workplace. If your workplace doesn't have a napping area, try to use a vacant office or other quiet location. This is a simple, worthwhile step that is a win-win for everyone.

I was told a common cause of this is the high levels of sugar that get added to our blood when we eat large lunches, and it overwhelms our bodies. Try taking a modest lunch, not small or big, and save some calories to be eaten as a mid-afternoon snack.
10. The best thing to do is to sleep. Some afternoons, when I really drowsy, I just take a quick nap for 10 minutes, or 15 at tops. That really perks me up and keeps me going the rest of the day. Of course, I work from home so sleeping mid-afternoon is not an issue. But if you have an office setting where this is possible, do try it.
A friend of mine had a hard time sleeping at night. She went to a very well respected doctor, Dr. Jay, in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Jay told my friend that she needed to get outside more and have the natural sunlight hit her eyes, so her body knows when it is day time versus night time. If you think about it, it makes sense because some times we don't get outside enough to "tell" our bodies this is day time. How will our bodies know when it is night time? Interesting thought. BTW: When I start to feel exhausted, I take a walk outside and it brightens me up. Take a walk and look around -- get extroverted.
Something to look at is melatonin to both help you sleep deeper and also to make you more awake. Alot of people think that it is just for sleep but it is actually to align you to light and dark. The other thing to look at are adaptogens of which Ginseng is one however the most effective is Maca. Adaptogens aren't stimulants like coffee but rather help regulate our energy reserves and body's ability to react to stressors. I am obviously biased but www.naturalhi.com has what I think are the best and purest quality products for both of those conditions Herbatonin and Femenessence however most health foods stores have other versions as well.
