Welcome to this edition of Whatever Wednesdays! As I was out running errands today, I started to think about tips for planning healthy meals for road trips. As you know our highways are laced with fast food restaurants so it can be difficult to eat healthy while cruising down the road.
My suggestion is to always plan ahead. If you know you will be on the road for a while, hit up your local Farmers Market or grocery store and stock up on food that you can pack to take along with you. This will not only save you some empty calories, but also time! If you have your food packed in the car, it helps you avoid that pit stop! Most all fruit travels well and can be eaten easily while driving. You can also make room for a small cooler to put in some celery sticks, carrots and cut broccoli with some hummus for dipping.
One thing I have made in the past for traveling is vegetable wraps. I've taken some whole wheat wraps and filled them with hummus, sliced avocado, lettuce and tomato and they are filling and satisfying. You can of course substitute with any veggies you like. You can also visit the bulk section of your grocery or health food store and get some trail mix, granola, nuts and dried fruit as well. These are just a few suggestions, there are countless other healthy ones to consider!
So as you can see, with a little planning and imagination, you can make your road trip satisfying and healthy!
