This is what a Vegan Looks Like

Posted Jul 10 2011 10:06pm

I have been a bit remiss in my blogging since I have been on vacation for the past two weeks on Long Island.  I usually save a few time-consuming recipes that look simply amazing for when I am back East with my family, so that I have a large crowd to enjoy them with.  As I have mentioned before, it has been interesting sharing this new lifestyle with family and friends.  I won’t deny that I myself once had many preconceived notions about vegans.  I have come to realize that those ideas were really formed as a result of encounters with what I like to call the “über vegan.”   I thought I had come up with this term myself, but after looking it up on urbandictionary.com, I found the following definition: “A vegan who is very extreme with their lifestyles.; Pammy is so über vegan, she only serves Tofurky for Thanksgiving”.  My idea of an über vegan is a bit more comprehensive: “Pammy is so über vegan, she only serves Tofurky for Thanksgiving. She calls people who are eating a traditional meal and launches into an angry tirade about how poor Gus the Turkey had to die just for their hedonistic pleasures, not to mention the environmental ramifications of their food choices.  She parades around in a hemp t-shirt and bohemian skirt, toting a yoga mat and a condescending attitude”.   For a long time I thought that vegans were mean and weird.  The truth is, some vegans are, and they give everybody a bad rap.  You don’t have to turn into a hippie or a jerk if you want to be vegan.  The list of people who are/have been vegan might surprise you.  It includes the likes of Cesar Chavez, Ellen DeGeneres, Woody Harrelson, Casey Kasem, Jared Leto, Tobey Maguire, Lea Michele, and Jason Mraz, to name a few.  Maybe if Jared Leto learns that I am vegan, he will realize that we were meant to be together. A vegan can dream.

In college I had a shirt that read, “This is what a feminist looks like.”  The point was that being a feminist didn’t have to be something crazy and radical; anyone could be a feminist, and for their own personal reasons. So in order to counteract all these crazy stereotypes about vegans, this is what a vegan looks like:
