THE TRUTH ACCORDING TO...THURSDAYS-SOME TRUTH ABOUT SALT

In today's The Truth According To..the topic is salt and is it really bad for you? I was reading an article in Health magazine by Kimberly Holland and she sheds some truth on this seasoning
The answer she gives the question "Is salt bad for you" is No. Sodium helps maintain the right balance of fluids in your body and aids your muscle movement. However too much is unhealthy.

Excess sodium can lead to hypertension which can cause heart attack and stroke. She reports that in a study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine that skipping as little as a half-teaspoon daily can cut these risks. Also, eating less can improve bone health.

80% of the salt we eat comes from processed and packaged foods, so it's important to read labels and fine print on packages. This is the example she provides: A half cup of canned chicken noodle soup can contain 890 miligrams of sodium and the average can holds two servings, and most people eat all of it so you get more than 75% of the salt you should have in one day! She uses the example of chicken soup, but I'm sure this goes for vegetable soups as well!

So based on this information, it's safe to say that salt can be sneaky. It's not all bad for you, but the more processed and packaged foods we consume the greater the risk we are getting more than we bargained for. So, as I mentioned in a previous post, they key is to limit the amounts of processed and packaged foods and eat fresh whenever you can. Also, when you are adding salt to your own prepared foods, go easy and light. I also only use sea salt at home. To get some facts about the difference between sea salt and table salt, click here .

So, shake that salt shaker a little less and be sure to read your packaged food labels and limit them as much as you can!
