It seems that Mother Nature wanted to show me who's boss. No sooner did I post about warm comfort foods - no matter the time of year - than we got hit with a massive heat wave. Ugh. It's times like these that I don't feel like eating much of anything, let alone something that involves turning on the stove (or, heaven forbid, the oven!). Smoothies are my version of "fast food" and seem especially appropriate when it's unbearably hot outside. So that we all might enjoy some cool fuel, here are some of the new favorites I've invented recently:
I love the crunchy black seeds of the kiwi - you can see half a dozen of them here, hiding just below the surface...Strawberry Kiwi 1/2 cup nondairy milk (I used
Eden's rice&soy )
3 kiwis
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 1/2 tsp agave (optional, depending on how sweet/tart your fruit is)
splash of vanilla
2 tsp flax oil*
Pineapple Raspberry 1/2 cup nondairy milk
1 cup fresh pineapple
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen raspberries
splash of vanilla
2 tsp flax oil*
I normally prefer smoothies that resemble milkshakes. This is made possible through the use of bananas that have been peeled, broken into halves or thirds, and frozen in plastic baggies. The aforementioned smoothies are a slight departure from this trend – the first being completely banana free and the second turning out more like yogurt. Both are delicious, though. Dietary variety is important – even though I could probably subsist on chocolate (raw cacao) cherry and peanut butter banana smoothies for the rest of my days…
*Smoothies are an amazing vehicle for all kinds of health supplements that might otherwise be tricky to consume (i.e. unpleasant taste or texture). The two that make a regular appearance in my blender are flax oil with DHA and green powder. This is optional, of course, but it’s an easy way to boost your consumption of omega-3’s, in the case of the oil.
